3 May Day Crafts For Early Years

May Day is a holiday celebrated in the UK as well as other regions in the world on the first Monday of May. It is a celebration of the first day of summer, and involves dancing, singing, and festivals to mark the occasion.

The first day of summer is a great reason to celebrate, and that’s why today we have compiled 3 fun May Day crafts you can do with early years children to welcome the warmer months. These crafts are all made primarily from paper, as we continue with our sustainable efforts at Connect.

What you’ll need:

  • Coloured paper
  • Child safe scissors
  • Tape or glue
  • Paper straw

Method:

Cut thin strips out of coloured paper. Fold the paper in half and tape or glue the end, making a petal shape. Secure a circle of yellow paper to the end of your straw, then secure strips of paper in a circle to form a flower. Add another circle of yellow paper on top to create a finished flower decoration for May Day!

What you’ll need:

  • Dark green card
  • Assorted coloured paper (pink, yellow, purple, green)
  • Child safe scissors
  • Glue
  • Tape

Method:

Take your green card and cut a small thin strip off the end, save this for later. Roll the rest of the card up into a cone shape and secure with tape or glue. Draw flowers and leaves on your coloured paper and cut them out. Glue these to your cone and leave to dry. Tape your strip of card into the top of the cone to create a handle. Allow children to collect flowers with their basket!

What you’ll need:

  • Thin strips of coloured paper
  • Tape or glue
  • A paper straw

Method:

Use tape or glue to secure a strip of coloured paper to the top of your paper straw. Continue to do this with different colours all around the straw to emanate a may pole. This can be a gun wand for children to play with during May Day celebrations!
