Important Update: Switch to the New EYFS Framework
This is your friendly reminder that from last Friday (1st November 2024), all early years providers must transition to the updated Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework. Make sure you’re working from the correct version—either download, view it online, or print a copy—because this is the document that legally guides your practice. Using the updated framework is essential to stay compliant and ensure you’re following the most current standards in early years education.
Two EYFS frameworks: group providers and childminders
It’s important to know that there are now two specific versions of the EYFS framework: one for group providers (like nurseries and preschools) and another exclusively for childminders.
Previously, childminders working in a domestic setting with four or more people—whether other childminders or assistants—were required to follow the group provider version. Now, all types of childminders, regardless of setting size or staffing, must refer only to the childminder version of the EYFS framework.
Key updates in the latest EYFS framework
To help ensure you’re fully up to date, here are some recent changes for both childminders and group providers:
For childminders:
The updated EYFS framework for childminders brings some exciting new guidance that focuses on enhancing flexibility and adaptability in providing care. This framework allows childminders to tailor their approaches to meet the unique needs of each child, particularly regarding health, safety, and welfare requirements. For instance, childminders can now operate outside of domestic premises, utilising spaces like community halls, schools, or forest schools.
One of the significant changes is the introduction of a new category: the ‘childminder without domestic premises.’ This category is designed for those who work entirely from non-domestic settings, reflecting the Government’s commitment to expanding childcare entitlements and ensuring that all children receive the best possible start in life.
Additionally, childminders will now be able to have four individuals working together under their registration, including the childminder themselves. This is an increase from the previous limit of three. For those providing care in domestic settings, the requirement has shifted from needing four or more caregivers to needing five or more.
Under the new regulations, at least half of the childminder’s provision must still occur in domestic premises. However, from 1st November, there will be two distinct categories of childminder: childminders with domestic premises and childminders without domestic premises.
For those already registered as childminders, there’s no need for immediate action regarding these changes. They will automatically benefit from the new flexibilities, including the ability to work with an additional childminder or assistant under their registration. This means childminders can continue to grow in their profession while providing high-quality care tailored to each child’s needs.
For group providers:
While the updated EYFS framework introduces several changes, there don’t appear to be significant alterations specifically for group providers. However, group settings need to remain vigilant and identify any subtle updates or shifts that may impact their practices. If you notice any changes or have insights to share, we encourage you to let us know so we can support one another in navigating this framework effectively.
Next steps
To ensure a smooth transition to the new EYFS framework, there are a few important steps to follow. First, take some time to familiarise yourself and your team with the updated framework. Understanding the new guidelines will help everyone provide the best care and education for children. Next, it’s essential to remove any outdated versions of the EYFS from your settings. Having only the current framework accessible will prevent any confusion and ensure that everyone is referring to the same document. Finally, stay informed about additional guidance and resources that may become available to support your transition.
