Why iConnect? A Closer Look at Its Impact on Early Years Education
iConnect is a web app created by Connect Childcare to lighten the workload of early years educators and practitioners. While it’s often described as an online learning journal, it’s so much more than that.
Connect Childcare was one of the first providers to develop digital solutions for the sector. We recently celebrated our 20th anniversary, and over the years, we’ve learned a great deal about the evolving needs of nurseries and childcare settings. Digital tools now play a crucial role in daily operations, helping to reduce admin time, simplify observations and assessments, enhance child development, and improve communication with parents.
From logging meals, sleep checks, and medication to supporting staff wellbeing by easing workload pressures, iConnect is designed to make a real difference. In this blog, we’ll take a closer look at its key features and hear from our product team about its positive impact in nursery settings.
The need for iConnect in early years education
Early years practitioners play a huge role in shaping children’s development, but their job comes with significant challenges. Time constraints, endless paperwork, and clear communication with parents and colleagues can often feel overwhelming. Instead of spending quality time engaging with children, many practitioners find themselves bogged down by administrative tasks—recording observations, tracking progress, and meeting compliance requirements.
We released a report in November 2024, A Look into Early Years Staff Wellbeing, which highlighted these pressures. Many professionals shared that excessive paperwork and frequent inspections were key stressors affecting their mental health. Worryingly, nearly 80% of respondents revealed that they weren’t using nursery management software—missing out on a tool that could significantly reduce their workload.
The survey results emphasise the need for a solution simplifying nursery practitioners’ daily tasks. They require efficient tools to reduce their workload, and iConnect can help with this.

What’s one of your favourite features of iConnect?
Claire: For me, the standout features are our Learning Stories and Snapshots within the Spotlight area of iConnect. These tools make it simple to record Snapshots (observations) and Learning Stories (assessments) while easily sharing them with parents. Whether it’s a baseline assessment, a two-year check, or just a special moment worth capturing, you can effortlessly document and share photos and notes.
With the flexibility to select indicators from various development frameworks and guidelines, you can tailor observations to each child’s unique learning journey. Plus, the Considerations feature allows staff to note the next steps and request support from colleagues, ensuring every child gets the attention they need.
By streamlining documentation, iConnect frees up staff to focus on meaningful interactions rather than hours of paperwork—making child-led learning easier than ever.
How does iConnect help with parent partnerships?
Naomi: iConnect works hand in hand with our ParentZone app, one of the highest-rated parent apps in the sector. With ParentZone, parents can stay involved by commenting, keeping up to date, and accessing Learning Journals to view their child’s progress.
We’ve also introduced a new Medication feature, making things even easier. Parents can now provide a digital signature, ensuring there’s always a clear and secure record of when their child has been given medicine. This improves efficiency, enhances communication, and gives parents peace of mind.
What about reports and planning in iConnect?
Claire: Where do I start? I think the Big Picture and Learning Journal reports are fantastic. The Big Picture gives a clear overview of a child’s progress, helping practitioners spot any areas that might need extra attention. If certain framework areas have fewer observations, staff can easily see the gaps and plan accordingly—making sure every child gets a well-rounded learning experience.
We’ve also recently introduced the Published Events Report, which provides managers with a detailed count of activities—such as snapshots, learning stories, meals, and more—across a selected period. Allowing managers to track trends and make data-driven decisions on staffing, resources, and operations.
Our Planning module helps staff organise activities across the nursery’s different areas and identify the equipment needed to support children’s learning and development. This approach supports child-led play, where staff set up the play space and provide the materials, but the child takes the lead in directing the activity.
Is iConnect easy to use?
Naomi: Absolutely! We’ve designed it to be super user-friendly, so it’s even easy to use in a busy nursery setting. You can use it on a tablet, so staff can stay on the move instead of being stuck at a desk. But if you prefer using a desktop, that works too! It’s really flexible.
Security is a big deal for us too—we hold ISO certification and carry out:

🔒 Annual external security audits.
🔒 Careful data structuring to keep everything safe and compliant.
And finally, what is your absolute favourite feature?
Claire and Naomi: The Event Checker! This tool helps management set the frequency of recording Learning Stories and Snapshots and ensures key milestones—like two-year progress checks—aren’t missed. It keeps everything on track and ensures consistent and meaningful observations.
